A Lesson from Elizabeth Bennet

ElizabethBennetThis morning, Darling Magazine published my piece, “A Lesson from Elizabeth Bennet,” in which I explore the ideals of love and relationships in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice through a modern woman’s perspective. Take a read…

  1. This was a beautifully written article! I adore the novel and the conclusions you drew from the classic were relevant and inspiring. I hope to one day be a writer like you, as I am currently a college student pursuing a degree in hopefully journalism or English. I also love songwriting, so reading your bio on Darling magazine was almost like reading my own. Keep up the good work!

Your article about living like an Elizabeth Bennet on the Darling website today is excellent!!! I recently graduated with my ba in English literature, too, and am sharing your article with all my English major friends 🙂

  3. Weird – I’m going through a P & P phase right now, but I’m watching the BBC one with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth. During my grad studies several years ago, I’d met a fellow student who hadn’t ever dated before. She was simply too busy with her own life and didn’t need someone. She wanted to have a life partner, but she was, like Elizabeth Bennet, simply waiting for the right person to come along. I admired her for that.

    1. Wonderful post! A great modern application of a classic.

  4. Just went over and read your piece. It’s wonderful! It also speaks so much to something that has been on my mind lately. When friends and family ask why I am not married, I often shrink from saying ‘because I don’t just want anything…’ I want something special; a relationship that is interesting and fun, with respect for the growth and flowering of each and both. I know so many of us do, and I really mean it… Well done Courtney!

  5. Wonderful article. I loved the bit that said “we are sometimes led to believe that these reflections of love are more important than love itself, and we may even be tempted to accept an offer of marriage simply to partake in the social game that love has become.” I always say something of that variety when people ask me why I don’t have a boyfriend 😉 I am waiting for something real! Wonderful article, again.

  6. Great article. I definitely think Austen was ahead of her time. When I was in college I actually wrote a paper on P&P in which I argue that Darcy is the romantic heroine and Elizabeth is the romantic hero. Mostly this is based on the classic heroine trope where she must leave her home to discover who she is, discover her husband, etc. But in P&P, it’s actually Darcy who leaves his home first, therefore meeting Elizabeth. And of course, he expresses his love first. Fun stuff 🙂

  7. A fabulous article. One worthy of passing on to those we care about.
    The truth is right here.
